On Wednesday 8 January, Scottish Citylink unveiled the first of its Plaxton Panorama double deck coaches for route 900. Jonathan Welch attended the launch event
There’s an old joke about people in Scotland seeing a yellow orb appear in the sky and not knowing what it is. Although the yellow orb only showed itself a few times during the day, the imposing yellow front of Scottish Citylink’s new double-deck coach certainly made its presence felt in Buchanan Bus Station, and on the motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh as Citylink revealed the first of its new fleet of coaches, the first double-deckers to carry Citylink’s blue and yellow colours for many years.
Joining the media at the launch event were representatives from ADL and Plaxton, Scottish Citylink owner Comfort Del Gro, and operators Stagecoach and Parks of Hamilton, who will operate the new fleet of 18 Volvo B11RLE coaches on behalf of Citylink. Waiting at Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station for the launch vehicle to arrive, it was readily apparent that the vehicles on offer to Scotland’s coach passengers are already of a high standard, with impressive tri-axle Plaxton Elites, Scania Irizars and Van Hool double deckers coming in and out every few minutes on Citylink, Megabus and Citylink Gold services, so these new 14.5m coaches would have to be something very special to stand out from the crowd.
