Classic Daimlers are back in action at Beamish. BEAMISH MUSEUM

Also in the North East, two classic Daimler buses have been in action at Beamish Museum after it was finally able to reopen its doors on 17 May. The vehicles have been ferrying vehicles around the County Durham site on a circular service, with regular cleaning and seating in accordance with Covid-19 restrictions.

The museum’s extensive collection of other buses, trams and trolleybuses has been stood down for the duration. These range from a 1900 Dick, Kerr & Co tram, new as Sunderland Corporation Tramways number 16, to Newcastle 501, a 1948 Sunbeam S7 trolleybus with Northern Coachbuilders bodywork.

The two Daimlers, acquired by the museum over the past few years are 1954 Rotherham Corporation Weymann-bodied Daimler CVG6, registration KET 220, and 304 VHN, a 1964 Daimler CCG5, new to Darlington Corporation.

Opened on 1970, Beamish is a world-renowned open air museum with reconstructed streets and much more, not forgetting the chance to visit an Edwardian dentist! Work is also continuing on a 1950s village recreation. Rhiannon Hiles, Beamish’s Deputy Director, said the museum had been very much looking forward to running the buses from 17 May. “We’ve been putting a lot of work into getting everything ready and can’t wait to be able to welcome everyone back. Beamish is a charity and having to close our doors three times due to the coronavirus pandemic has been extremely difficult and has had a devastating impact. We’re so incredibly grateful for everyone’s ongoing support as we look ahead to our recovery.”
