Italian operator Autoservizi Troiani is expanding its electric bus fleet with 110 Mercedes-Benz eCitaros.

Daimler Buses Italia will supply the 12m buses, which will be used in the eastern suburbs of Rome, by 2026. The first 10 vehicles were unveiled on 16 September, during the opening of European Mobility Week. “Today, we are very proud to present the first 10 completely electric buses, marking an important milestone in our commitment to environmentally sustainable mobility” said Giovanni Troiani, Chairman of Autoservizi Troiani.

The deployment of these vehicles marks the first time that electric buses are no longer exclusively used in the historic centre of Rome, but also on the outskirts, the beginning of the project declared by the company to fully convert its suburban service to electromobility.

This first delivery will be followed by another 30 buses in 2024, with the goal of completing the delivery of the remaining 70 eCitaro buses by mid 2026.

Stefano Giordani, CEO and Chairman of Daimler Buses Italy, said: “Autoservizi Troiani’s decision to collaborate with Daimler Buses in this ambitious electromobility project in Rome underlines the reliability of our vehicles in terms of safety and efficiency. Our NMC3 batteries allow buses to travel for up to 280km without recharging. Our safety systems exceed the GSR B standards, thus reducing driver stress, while the buses’ anti roll and anti pitch systems ensure a high level of passenger comfort. This mix of elements enables us to offer public transport companies the highest level of safety, comfort and cost savings.”

The first 10 eCitaro buses are equipped with the latest NMC3 batteries, which guarantee a range of around 280 kilometres on a single charge, whilst some will be equipped with larger NMC4 battery packs.

The buses are fitted with three doors and can carry up to 73 passengers, with seating for 26 and space for 47 standees.
