CBW’s Gemma Ireland Pell paid a visit to Abellio’s Walworth depot in London to hear about the role of women in keeping the city’s buses running, and in the transport industry as a whole
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8 March as a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Every year, the day gets wider recognition. We celebrate the women in our personal lives, we celebrate our mums, friends, sisters, daughters, aunties, cousins, colleagues, plus many more, and we recognise women’s growing roles in business and industry. There is something truly beautiful about celebrating the women in our lives, and having a day to look back on how far as a society we have come over the years, where females are celebrated for so many different reasons. If we travelled back a century and spoke about how we have a specific day aimed at celebrating the achievements of women, they’d be shocked. Though it’s maybe also thought-provoking to ask why we should need such a day; shouldn’t equality be a given, rather than newsworthy?
