Jonathan Welch gets behind the wheel of the 1,000th BYD ADL Enviro400
Alexander Dennis’ Enviro200 and Enviro400 ranges have become a familiar sight on the roads of the UK – and beyond – and the British manufacturer’s partnership with BYD to offer an all-electric option has only served to broaden its appeal. In the first five years of the partnership, around 500 electric buses were delivered. Thanks to growing orders from operators in cities including London and Glasgow, the figure jumped to 1,000 by the following year. The 1,000th vehicle formed part of a batch delivered to Stagecoach Bluebird and based at its Tullos depot in Aberdeen.
The buses are used on city and airport services around the ‘Granite City,’ which was once also very much home to the oil industry but which, as with transport, is quickly shifting its focus to a more renewable future. It seemed an ideal opportunity, therefore, to get behind the wheel of two recently-delivered BYD ADL products and see how they stack up.
Aberdeen’s 22 buses were officially launched in June. Stagecoach Bluebird Managing Director Peter Knight said at the time: “We are all really excited to be sharing BYD ADL’s celebration of delivering its 1,000th fully electric bus. Introducing these new vehicles reflects the investment both we and Scottish Government are making thanks to the Scottish Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme and the funding made available to support the delivery of the new buses.
