The latest figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association ACEA show that in 2023, registrations of new electric buses in the EU increased by 39.1% to 5,166, representing a market share of 15.9%. Broken down by country, the statistics show that Spain was ahead of the field with growth of 269.7%, followed by Italy with a 253.4% increase and Germany at 29.3%. The figures also show that hybrid buses also saw growth in numbers, with a 115.1% increase in numbers and a market share increase from 7.1% to 12.8% compared to the previous year, thanks in a large part to growth in popularity in France and Spain as well as Germany to a lesser extent. Against that background, ACEA found that diesel maintains the largest market share, almost two-thirds of new buses still relying on the fuel, though 2023’s 62.3% was slightly down from 66.9% in 2022.
