In late 2019, Burnley Bus Company’s Bob McDowell celebrated 50 years in the industry. Jonathan Welch caught up with him to find out why he has stayed so long
For all the moans that regularly do the rounds of depot canteens up and down the country, there are many people for whom the bus industry has been their life, and few more so than Burnley Bus Company’s Bob McDowell, a skilled coachbuilder who in November 2019 reached the milestone of 50 years with the company. Bob is a true character, and it was a pleasure to sit down and have a chat about his five decades in the industry. “I started at 15,” said Bob, who has seen many changes over the years. “When I started, things were changing, it went from wood to aluminium. I started off doing panels.” However, Bob’s career has also seen him work in other disciplines, including upholstery.
