A fire destroyed seven specially-adapted minibuses used by disabled people and school children in Somerset in the early evening of Saturday 26 April. Fire crews were alerted to a fire at Taunton’s Silk Mills park & ride site shortly after 1950hrs, where a number of vehicles were found to be alight. Images shared on social media by Avon & Somerset Police show that a number of vehicles were damaged, but the police force said that no injuries were reported.

Avon & Somerset Police appealed for witnesses, saying: “This will have a significant impact on vulnerable members of the community, and officers urge anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward. Police especially want to hear from you if you saw someone acting suspiciously or have any relevant dashcam or other footage around the park and ride between 7pm and 8pm on Saturday.”

The town’s park & ride service as well as school services were expected to run as normal following the incident, but potential passengers were advised to check Travel Somerset’s ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) page for updates. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said it was also investigating the cause of the fire.
