A new bus design has been launched at Colchester Zoo as part of the build-up to the zoo’s 60th anniversary in 2023.
In partnership with First Essex, the zoo has created a striking new look for one of the buses that regularly takes visitors to the attraction. The ‘Animal Bus’ features two colourful incarnations of an elephant and an orangutan, while incorporating a diamond pattern to mark the diamond anniversary.

The new bus was unveiled to the public at the entrance to the zoo, where families had the chance to meet stilt-walking First Essex bus driver Tommy Tall, as well as enjoy craft activities and the opportunity to explore the bus. The new Animal Bus will be seen across the Colchester area and will be one of three buses operating on service 75 which passes the zoo.
Home to more than 180 different species, Colchester Zoo was established in 1963 by zoologists Frank and Helena Farrah. Garry Nicholass, Commercial Director at First Essex, commented: “We are delighted to have partnered with Colchester Zoo in the creation of the Animal Bus. For many years, First Essex has provided bus services, dropping off and picking up passengers heading to the zoo. To join in the zoo’s anniversary celebrations in this way is another example of our commitment to providing great services for the communities we operate in.”
