Jonathan Welch takes a trip over some of the famous Swiss mountain roads aboard an iconic yellow PostBus

The dramatic Swiss Alps have been a staple of European tourist destinations ever since the likes of Thomas Cook started leading British tourists there in large numbers well over a century ago. Even today, the stunning scenery and twisting mountain passes are a huge draw for tourists from around the world, so it was with some pleasure that I accepted an invitation to travel on an iconic Swiss PostBus on a route which would take in four Alpine passes. Known in English as PostBus, the yellow and white buses have a long and rich history as part of Switzerland’s transport system, providing connections across the whole country on interurban and regional routes with a varied fleet to suit the many different operating requirements the country poses. Depending which part of the country you are in, the buses bear the German name PostAuto, the Italian AutoPostale or the French CarPostal, all with appropriate translations of the operator’s ‘the yellow class’ tagline. Whatever the language, they are all a staple part of Swiss daily life.
