Steven Knight finds out how Fowlers Travel has risen to the challenges facing the bus and coach industry
The bus and coach industry has faced unprecedented challenges over many decades and has had to adapt and change. Change has been more challenging for some while others have relished the opportunities that it has created.
Along the way we have seen some operators fall by the wayside, but others have remained dominant in their areas by doing what they do well. One of these is Fowlers Travel, now in its 76th year after celebrating 75 years of operation last year.
The business can be found in the south Lincolnshire village of Holbeach Drove, which lies in the flat Fenland landscape between Spalding and King’s Lynn, the nearest major city being CBW’s home of Peterborough, some 15 miles away.
Fowlers Travel was established in 1947 when William Fowler applied for an operator’s licence and registered the W H Fowler business. This was during the immediate post-war period when car ownership remained low but, after wartime travel restrictions were lifted, many locals were keen to travel beyond the local area.
