Andrew Thompson reports from France, where a new trolleybus service has replaced the former TVR-operated routes in the city of Nancy

In early April 2025, a new trolleybus service was officially inaugurated in the eastern French city of Nancy, replacing the previous TVR (Transport sur Voie Réservée) system with a guide rail, which was in operation from December 2000 to March 2023 and consistently marketed as a ‘tramway.’

The conversion to standard trolleybus operation required 18 months, including the replacement of the overhead power lines and the dismantling of the TVR guide rail, which was embedded in the road surface. Additionally, various aesthetic improvements and urban beautification measures were carried out in the city centre along the bus corridor. The new bi-articulated trolleybuses boast powerful traction batteries for off-wire range extension, as the core section of the BRT route T1 through the city centre has not been fitted with catenary for aesthetic reasons. Along other sections of the line, the bi-artics can take advantage of their own reserved pathway.
