Jonathan Welch continues his conversation with Kevin Mayne, Operations Director at respected Scottish operator Maynes of Buckie, about the company and the wider industry

In last week’s issue, I spoke to Kevin Mayne, Operations Director of Maynes of Buckie, about the family-owned firm’s background and some of the wider issues affecting the industry up to 2020, and the upheaval which followed.

Whilst the coaches and the development of the business might be at the forefront, Maynes is still very much a family operator, and felt the loss of Director Sandra Mayne back in 2011 badly. No easier was the passing of Sandra’s husband and Managing Director Gordon Mayne in 2020, both of whom were well liked by colleagues and locals alike, and who had put in so much effort to build up the company over the years.

“We heard that my uncle Charlie had passed away while we were on the North Coast 500 in June 2020,” Kevin explained with sadness. “Then my uncle John passed away the next day. The following day, Gordon, my dad, passed away as well. That left a huge hole.”
