Jonathan Welch speaks to the father and son team who run Hunt’s Coaches in Alford, Lincolnshire
Celebrating its 95th birthday this year is Lincolnshire operator Hunt’s Coaches. Based in the small market town of Alford in East Lindsey, at the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the company operates a varied fleet on a range of work, including private hire, holidays across the UK and further afield, and a wide range of day trips to locations nationwide, as well as local services, schools and demand-responsive transport.
CBW paid a visit to the operator’s depot in the town in late March, to see how father and son team Michael and Joe Hunt keep the wheels of the family business turning. Alongside the coach and bus operation, the business also runs a small petrol station, providing a useful facility for local residents, and one which, according to Joe, is largely self-contained and managed by its own small dedicated staff.
Joe explained that the business was founded back in 1930 by his grandfather, Frederick Hunt, and went on to be taken over by his father and uncle during the 1970s, the business having already grown significantly by that point from its first coach. Frederick, or Fred, started off with a single Bedford, and began his operations with a three times per day service to the nearby market town of Boston, around 25 miles away to the south-east.
