Ali Piper, Chair of PUMA. Go SOUTH WEST

As reported in ‘News in Brief’ just before Christmas, Go South West recently sent a coach full of aid to Ukraine. The company has sent further details about the trip, which saw two drivers to take a coach load of vital aid to those on the front line in Ukraine. Local charity Plymouth Ukraine Medical Aid (PUMA) had already taken medical supplies to Ukraine, and had also been collecting other supplies such as food, clothing and Christmas gifts for children, which they delivered to Ukraine to make sure it found its way into the hands of those who need it most.

Ali Piper, Chair of PUMA, has been on previous visits to Ukraine and said: “The people in Ukraine don’t just need medical aid, they need everything, so it’s grown into this Christmas appeal. We make a big impact for the people we see – we see their faces, we see pictures of the donations in use. It’s rewarding, you can see you’re making an impact. Being a small organisation means we can make sure aid gets to where it’s intended.”

Richard Stevens, Managing Director of Go South West, added: “As a company, we’ve been doing what we can to support the people of Ukraine. Our Peace Bus has helped to raise thousands for the Ukraine Appeal, and being able to loan a coach and two drivers to get aid into Ukraine is another way we’ve been happy to help.”

The coach travelled to the Ukraine/Slovakia border, where the donations were taken in smaller vehicles to the front line. Driver Graham Chafer said: “It took us three days to get there and they were long days, but the two hours we spent unloading the coach made it all worth it, seeing all the baby food, nappies and Christmas presents that were being delivered.”

Fellow driver Ray Mooney added: “We drove over 3,000 miles, but delivering all the supplies was humbling, it really brought a lump to your throat.”

CBW sends its congratulations to all involved for their efforts, as well as all of the staff from across the coach and bus sectors who have taken part in efforts to help the people of Ukraine.
