Jonathan Welch paid a visit to Arriva’s Green Lane depot in Liverpool to learn more about the group’s operations in the north-west city
In late January, we carried news of the arrival of a fleet of new buses for Arriva’s Merseyside operations. The £7.4 million investment by the DB-owned company has brought the delivery of 24 Wrightbus StreetDeck double-deckers for Liverpool’s routes 10B to Huyton, and 14 to Croxteth, along with 10 Streetlite single-deckers for local routes 46 and 49. At the time of the launch, Richard Hoare, Arriva North West and Wales’ Commercial Director said: “We are delighted to be able to commit such a strong level of investment into the Merseyside bus network. We recognise public transport as one of the key ways to help protect our environment for the future and save our planet. That is why we are proud to be introducing 34 ultra low-emission vehicles into our fleet.”
In recent times, Arriva as a whole seems to have been been among the least active of the major groups in terms of fleet investment, innovation and publicity; some might suggest this is due to the shadow cast by parent company Deutsche Bahn’s stated intention to look for a buyer for the business, others might say that it has simply been getting on with running buses at a difficult time for the industry. Either way, I decided that the news of the investment was a good time to head over to Liverpool and find out a bit more about the new fleet and the wider North West and Wales operation.
