The final whirr in commercial service of a type of ticket machine that served London Transport for 40 years will be happening this Easter weekend. Introduced in 1953, the Gibson ticket machine was in its own way revolutionary. Instead of the previous practice of needing a plethora of pre-printed tickets, the conductor simply had to select the appropriate fare, or code, and wind the handle to issue a ticket.
Although London last used Gibsons in 1993 the Epping Ongar Railway, which runs the last commercial bus service with conductors, has continued to use them.
