Operators East Yorkshire and Stagecoach have joined forces to implement a new QR code system to provide passengers with real time updates. Both operators will participate in the scheme as part of a new partnership from the Hull City Council, and QR codes will be added to all bus stop timetable displays in the city. Scanning the codes with a smartphone will take passengers to a real-time timetable for buses due at that stop, without having to use each of the respective operator’s apps.
Portfolio holder for transport, Councillor Mark Ieronimo told the Hull Daily Mail: “No one likes standing at a bus stop wondering when their bus will arrive. We already have real-time digital displays at some bus stops in Hull, and these QR codes take this a step further by making this information available to passengers at every stop that displays a bus timetable. The codes will help make travelling by bus that little bit easier by helping those with smartphones access real-time information quicker.”
Matt Cranwell, Managing Director of Stagecoach East Midlands, added: “We know many of our customers are now using real-time tracking through their smartphones to find the actual arrival times of our buses, which helps to reduce waiting around at stops and makes planning journeys by bus so much easier.
“The new QR codes will give people instant access to live bus arrivals across Hull, making the bus a better choice for short journeys in the city.”
East Yorkshire Managing Director Ben Gilligan told CBW: “We have been really pleased to work with Hull City Council and Stagecoach to develop the plans to deploy the QR codes. We feel that this is a great way of complementing our existing customer information channels including our app and website, real time displays and the provision of printed timetables.”
