Jonathan Welch takes a photographic look at an unusual service operated by Mercedes-Benz Citaro articulated buses in the north of Scotland

Articulated or ‘bendy’ buses have always been rare in the UK, and are quickly becoming an extinct breed in regular service. A Scottish island isn’t a place you might think of as a somewhere to find them, but Orkney operator J&V Coaches uses a pair of Mercedes-Benz Citaros, both new to Go-Ahead London, on cruise shuttle services between the island’s main cruise terminal at Hatston Pier and the centre of its main town, Kirkwall, a short ride away. The free shuttle bus is operated on behalf of Orkney Islands Council, and covers the distance of around 2.5 miles in around around seven minutes. Shuttle buses operate from 0830hrs until 60 minutes prior to the ship’s departure, or 1800hrs if the ship sails after 1900hrs. The service operates on a continuous basis, with buses constantly shuttling between the two points.
