Jonathan Welch pays a visit to the Castleford premises of Pelican Yutong to see how the rapid growth in coach and bus sales is driving expansion
It is already three years since Castleford-based family firm Pelican Engineering celebrated its century in business, and the sale of its 500th Yutong just a few short years after becoming the UK importer for the established Chinese brand. With a firm foundation and a broad product range across the PCV and HGV sector, the company survived challenges of the pandemic relatively unscathed, and is now looking to the future as it expands the range of coaches and electric buses available in the UK market.
Pelican is currently in the hands of third generation Richard Crump, whose daughter Amelia has recently stepped up to take charge of coach sales in the north of England, and whose father still calls in a few times a week to see how things are going. With work on a new Parts Distribution Centre and new coach and bus showroom and workshop currently underway, the media was invited to a special event to showcase the growing bus and coach business. Richard explained a little more about where the business is and how it has fared over the difficult last few years and what it has planned in the near future.
