Jonathan Welch pays a visit to well-known Cambridgeshire operator Whippet to find out how its three-way business is growing
In last week’s issue, as our regular readers will recall, I was given the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a bus type that I’ve never driven before, the Mellor Sigma 12, thanks to Cambridgeshire operator Whippet. The county’s oldest bus operator, Whippet has been taking people where they need to go since 1919, and celebrated 105 years of service in 2024.
As a long-standing independent, as with many other similar operations in its part of the world, Whippet has long held the fascination of bus enthusiasts, operating an interesting mix of vehicles throughout its lifetime, carrying the company’s unique whippet dog logo on a variety of blue-based colour schemes. With a fleet of around 40 vehicles, it currently has three main strands to its operations: rural services outwith Cambridge, the U1 and U2 ‘Universal’ routes in partnership with the University of Cambridge, and its Flixbus express service commitments which take its vehicles as far as Paris and Amsterdam on a daily basis.
