David Longbottom takes a look at a new open-top tour that has started in Kingston-upon-Hull for locals and staycationers

The City of Hull, or Kingston upon Hull to give it its formal title as you would be reminded during the on-board commentary of the recently launched open-top bus tour, hasn’t had much of a tour bus market over the years. Many years ago Kingston-upon-Hull City Transport (KHCT) operated a City Tour showing off the docks and much of the city, and much more recently East Yorkshire operated the Hull Explorer in peak summer 2017 & 2018, building on Hull’s growing visitor market after becoming City of Culture 2017.

However, this was set to change this year with the launch of a regular service operated by Jorvik Tour Bus which started in July, set up by David Curry who drives and gives detailed commentary throughout the route. The original incarnation of Jorvik Tour Bus ran tours of York from 1984 until 1992, where initially it was a trailblazer with numerous other operators following with similar offerings.

The tour operates hourly on Saturdays to Wednesdays until the end of October, then becoming weekends-only until December, and covers the city centre, the old town, the Museums Quarter, Hull Minster and The Deep (the city’s award-winning aquarium) involving crossing several of Hull’s bridges. It is also due to call at Hull’s thriving Marina area, but that is currently inaccessible due to road works.

Painted in a bright orange livery the bus used is a 2008 Alexander Dennis Enviro400 new to Metroline, LK08NVF, freshly converted to open top for its new role.
