Adrian Morton reports from a chilly Blackpool, where Blackpool Bus & Coach Trim is helping operators nationwide to refresh their fleets

Wednesday 12 June saw me visit Blackpool to witness the official opening of the Talbot Road tramway extension, bringing trams back to Blackpool North station 61 years after the last one departed. I took the opportunity whilst there to visit Blackpool Bus & Coach Trim, owned by partners Daniel Sims and Wayne Binks and situated near to the town’s airport. The business has been established for around five years and was the result, after long careers, of both partners being made redundant with the closure of the well-established Blackpool Trim Shop, owned by Bob Taylor.

The business employs three other people: Dave Harrison, Samantha Dawson and Phil Roxby. Phil, a trimmer of many years, was formerly employed by the erstwhile Duple Coachbuilders which was based in the town, and which closed in 1989, now some 35 years ago.

Samantha is the main sewist but thankfully two others are able to step up and help should the need arise, which is a distinct advantage for the company. Samantha and Daniel explained that there is a huge shortage of seamstresses in the country, with many coming back out of retirement to help. Having three is very much a luxury for the business, so when Samantha is away work can carry on as normal, whereas with others it may mean a break in supply for customers.
