Lecks Travel announced that it ceased trading with immediate effect on August 12, according to the North-West Evening Mail

The Haverthwaite company which served residents in South Cumbria for more than 90 years closed its doors resulting in the loss of jobs for 11 employees.

Originally established in 1924, the taxi firm turned coach operator family-run business rebranded in 1997 and was known for its dedication to local school runs.

A meeting was due to take place on August 25 for the official liquidation of the company. It is understood that the company will not be fulfilling existing bookings and alternative arrangements are being made.

Lecks Travel has contacted any customers that have been affected and full refunds have been made.

A statement from The P&A Partnership – the company appointed to manage to process, said: “On Wednesday August 12 Lecks Travel was closed for business and ceased all trade. Booths had terminated their free bus service on August 31.

“New school contracts had been greatly undercut and ongoing increasing costs, time and effort of running the business all had an effect on this decision.

“The process will be handled on a voluntary liquidation basis by The P&A Partnership Limited who have been appointed by the director of Lecks Travel.

“A meeting of creditors will be held on August 25 to formally place the company in liquidation. Buyers are being sought to take over the company bookings going forward. Short term arrangements have been made for immediate bookings and all 11 employees have now been made redundant.”

Mark Wilson, South Lakeland District Council and Cumbria County Councillor for Ulverston East, is disappointed by the news.

He said: “It’s a sad day – especially for Lecks Travel, but they have done everything could have and it’s always very hard in these times of austerity.

“The bus service is a lifeline for the elderly when they can’t drive and so the council will be working on that.”
