The Leigh to Manchester busway has been hit with delays, the BBC has reported.

New bus lanes were due to open on the East Lancashire Road in the summer, but Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has now said they will open by the end of the year instead. TfGM claimed that ‘uncharted utilities’ underground were the cause of the delays.

The 4.5 mile guided buseay between Leigh and Ellenbrook is expected to be completed by early 2016.

Local businesses and residents have made complaints about the A580 roadworks which they say are causing major issues, though TfGM said the work will reduce delays and improve bus links.

Peter Boulton from TfGM said: “As work is completed along sections of the East Lancs Road, traffic management is being removed to lessen the impact on drivers.

“The work on the road will be fully completed by the end of the year and we would like to thank people for their patience whilst we deliver these improvements that will benefit all road users.”
