Andrew Thompson takes a brief look at the Austrian city of Linz, where some impressive bi-articulated trolleybuses operate
Located on the River Danube, Linz is the regional capital of Upper Austria and the third-largest city in this Alpine nation. With a population of 212 000, Linz is known for its large industrial base with both major steel works and chemical plants, yet it also has a charming and historic old town. The backbone of the city’s urban mass transit are a 31 kilometre-long tramway and a 19 kilometre-long trolleybus system with five lines that cover districts not served by the trams.
The trolleybus network first opened in 1944 and is currently one of only two in Austria. As recently as August 2024, the overhead wires were extended by one stop and a few hundred metres in the riverside port district and trolleybus line 46 now terminates at Hafenportal. The other four trolleybus lines are numbered 41, 43, 45 and 45A.
