The Gilford star of ‘Dad’s Army,’ seen here at Bressingham Steam Museum, will be on display at Lodge Coaches event. ALAN HUGHES

Entries are still being welcomed for the Lodge’s Coaches Bus Rally & Car Meet this Sunday (20 August) when there’s the chance to see two rather contrasting machines with World War Two connections.

Firstly a Spitfire is scheduled to fly above the High Easter, Essex, venue at 2.30pm, and secondly there’ll be the chance to see a recent addition to the Lodge preserved fleet – a 1931 Gilford AS6 bus which starred in legendary BBC comedy ‘Dad’s Army.’

DX 9547, which carries a unique Taylor body, was new to Rivers of Ipswich in 1931, later passing to Mulleys of Ixworth. After falling on hard times it was restored by Malcolm Skevington and his team. The Gilford was advertised for sale after Malcolm’s death, passing via Anthony Slater of English Riviera Tours to Lodge’s.

Director Andrew Lodge said: “We wanted to see the Gilford saved and it will be having some work done on the engine over the winter.” However, a decision has yet to be made as to whether the bus will retain its original livery or be painted into Lodge colours.

To display at the rally, which takes place from 1000 to 1500hrs, entrants are invited to call 01245 231262 or email [email protected].
