London has been named Europe’s most ‘pet-friendly’ city, thanks in part to its public transport network.

According to a study carried out by the mortgage experts at money.co.uk, the English capital has 164 dog-friendly parks, 240 pet grooming facilities, and 172 pet daycare options – in addition to an animal-approved transport network.

The Pet-Friendly Cities Report ranks 20 of Europe’s most densely-populated cities, scoring them on their individual pet-friendly credentials, such as travelling on public transport, pet-friendly rentals, and options for veterinary treatment within the city centre.

Using a weighted ranking system, the study then assigned a score to each city in the index, revealing the most pet-friendly cities in Europe.

Coming in second place was Paris, scoring 71 out of 100 in the report for green space with 163 parks welcoming four-legged friends.

Rome rounds out the top three scoring 57.5 out of 100 with 39 groomers, 29 pet daycare centres, and an impressive 129 pet stores.

The report also revealed that cats are the most popular pet with 69,830,100 of them owned across the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Poland, Romania, and Hungary.

In the UK, dogs (9,000,000) are 12.5% more popular than cats (8million) whereas fish (37million) are 87% more popular in France than in the UK (20m).

This isn’t the first time London’s public transport system has been praised for its pet-friendliness; in a study by Essential Living, the tube network was found to be the most comfortable in the world for both humans and animals.

Much like the bus network in the city, the tube allows dogs to travel for free as long as they are on a lead, as well as smaller animals in suitable carriers.
