Nick Larkin continues his look back at 50 years of Showbus

Last week, to mark the final Showbus event, we started speaking to organiser Martin Isles about how it started and developed, and told the story up to the 1970s.

In 1982 came a move to Woburn, to many the spiritual home of Showbus, where the event would be held for ten years, despite problems of having to dig buses out of the mud.

Many events suffered from bad weather, hence the nickname ‘Showerbus’! Recalled Martin: “There was only one year it didn’t rain.”

After severe flooding in Bedfordshire and days before the 1992 event, the Woburn Abbey authorities wanted Martin to cancel the show before the safari park stepped in to save it. “A happy ending, but this was nearly the last Showbus. Only strong support persuaded me to carry on,” Martin recalled.
