A group of companies including the National Express parent company Mobico is considering launching a cross-Channel rail service to rival Eurostar, reports the Financial Times. Other parties involved in the discussions include the Spanish Cosmen family, which is an investor in Mobico, the newspaper reports. The rail service between London and Paris through the Channel Tunnel could start running as early as 2025, it is reported, and would represent the first challenge to Eurostar’s current monopoly of passenger rail traffic linking London to Paris and Brussels, previous proposals having been unable to overcome the logistical and financial difficulties of operating services through the Channel Tunnel.
