On Saturday 9 March, Nottingham City Transport held a public launch event for its first electric buses

Nottingham City Transport (NCT) launched its new fleet of Yutong electric buses at a special event in Nottingham’s Old Market Square on Saturday 9 March. Buses branded in blue, red, pink and silver versions its livery were on display between 1000 and 1500hrs, allowing prospective passengers to take a look at the new vehicles, which also feature air conditioning, a re-positioned next stop display screen and rear facing screen which can be seen from the wheelchair bay, a larger area for pushchairs, a hearing loop system, USB-C charging ports and full colour destination displays that the operator believes are easier to see from a distance and in the dark

NCT Managing Director David Astill described the arrival of the fleet as the start of an exciting new era in the company’s long history, adding that NCT is keen to play its part in Nottingham’s aspiration to be carbon-neutral by 2028.

The delivery marks the arrival of NCT’s first 24 electric buses and the start of a programme that will see its remaining diesel powered buses leave the fleet over the next four years; the operator already has a large fleet of gas-powered buses. The new electric buses were funded via a joint bid by Nottingham City Transport and Nottingham City Council to the ZEBRA fund, and the first deliveries will be followed by 24 more, giving a fleet of 48, supported by new charging infrastructure at NCT’s Trent Bridge depot. The total cost of the new fleet and associated infrastructure is £32.2m, of which £13.4m has come from the ZEBRA fund along with £18.8m from NCT over the lifetime of the vehicles.
