As a prelude to next week’s MCV eVoRa test drive, Jonathan Welch visits Orkney to find out more about the Stagecoach depot there

It sometimes seems odd to go to a far-flung corner of the country and see buses in a livery more commonly associated with cities and urban areas, and whereas those heading to the more remote Shetland Islands will find a variety of local colours, visitors heading to Orkney would until recently have found the familiar red, white, orange and blue of the Stagecoach corporate scheme. Until recently, that is, as the fleet is in the process of being renewed in a partnership between Stagecoach and Orkney Islands Council which has seen the operator procure a mix of MCV Volvos and Optare Solos, all of which will carry a new blue and white based scheme, resembling the previous Stagecoach livery, but with blocks of blue and green colours at the rear in place of the red and orange swoops. To coincide with the delivery of the new fleet, I visited the islands to find out more about this remote outpost of Stagecoach operations, some 200 miles north of Inverness.
