Go-Ahead London has been sentenced and fined £600k following the death of a worker when he fell from a ladder

A statement released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) confirmed that in May 26 2011, a worker was using a ladder to refurbish a fuel tank at the Peckham Bus Garage. He fell two and a half meters backwards and suffered fatal injuries.

An investigation by HSE found the company did not implement and keep to their own procedures for managing contractors. As a result they failed to manage their contractors effectively and ensure that they conduct work in a safe manner.

Go-Ahead London of 41-51 Grey Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne have been found guilty of section 3 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and have been fined £600,000 and ordered to pay costs of £78,531.

Speaking after the hearing HSE inspector Neil Fry said: “This is a tragic case which could have been entirely preventable; if the company had managed their contractors effectively then the worker would have returned home safely from work.”

CBW contacted Go-Ahead to comment, they said: “Go-Ahead London recognises the events which led to the unfortunate death of Mr Porter and offers its condolences to Mr Porter’s family and friends.

Although this was an isolated incident, Go-Ahead London undertook a review of its contractor management procedures and sought to ensure that this would not happen again.  To date, and a reflection of the fact that the company continues to take its health and safety responsibilities seriously, there have been no further incidents of this kind.”
