Steering systems manufacturer Pailton Engineering has installed a new Matsuura MX-520 CNC machining centre at its headquarters in Coventry. The five-axis machine is part of the company’s latest investment in advanced manufacturing systems, led by new Managing Director David Pound. With a machining envelope of 520mm in diameter and 350mm in height, and a loading capacity of 150kg, Pailton says the new MX-520 allows it to automate production of its yoke range, requiring minimal human input even when producing intricate components.

“The Matsuura MX-520 is renowned for its precision, speed, flexibility and reliability, making it ideal for complex machining tasks critical to the Pailton Engineering range of steering systems,” said Operations Manager Steve Nollett. “By continuing to install advanced technology like this in our manufacturing facility, we’ll further improve the quality, consistency and availability of top-quality steering components.

“The new machine will make our time on the shop floor much easier. The five axes and multi-pallet system of the MX-520 enables machining of complex geometries previously impossible without manual manipulation of the part. Now, instead of needing a person present every 45 minutes to manipulate or remove parts, we’ve got prolonged unmanned operation.”

Pailton says the investment will help it to meet increased customer demand while continuing to deliver higher-quality components.
