Devon has many attractions, but one that is often underestimated is the city of Plymouth. It is a city that is, perhaps, best known for its connections to the Royal Navy and its naval base, Devonport. The largest such base in Western Europe, it boasts 15 dry docks, 25 tidal docks, five basins and occupies four miles of waterfront. The base employs 2,500 service personnel and civilians, supports around 400 local firms and generates around 10% of Plymouth’s income.
The city itself is steeped in Royal Navy history, with Devonport being in operation since 1691, but the city also boasts the historic Port of Plymouth, which can trace its origins back as far as the Bronze Age.
