The Southampton AEC Regent is returning for use in its home city. PHIL BLAIR

Forty years after being withdrawn as Southampton’s last open platform bus, AEC Regent KOW 909F is returning for regular use in the city. The Neepsend-bodied bus did see another short stint in service alongside AEC Routemasters post deregulation in 1987 before entering preservation.

Now the bus has been acquired by renowned Hampshire independent Xelabus and will be available for private hire as well as occasional service use.

On Saturdays 14 and 21 August from 0930 until 1630hrs the bus will operate free journeys between Southampton City (Vincents Walk) and Palm Road via Shirley, a route it would have covered many times in the 1970s.

On bank holiday 29 August at 1030 and 1430 a fare-paying city tour will operate, costing £5 per person and recreating that last tour of the districts no 401 ran through saying farewell to the city.

“We are very proud to bring this bus back to Southampton and are sure many people will enjoy riding on it,” said Phil Blair at Xelabus.
