The 50th and final edition of the Showbus rally took place on Sunday 25 September. Richard Sharman was in attendance to report on the proceedings
There was something very uncharacteristic about the morning of the final Showbus, a rally that has over the years developed a following of rainclouds. But there was barely a cloud in the sky as I set off for the Hertfordshire County Showground for the very last edition of an event that has always set the bar high when it comes to attracting the most vehicles in a field, or indeed airfield.
I set off early to capture vehicles entering the site, and as I joined the M25 I expected to see vast numbers of coaches and buses plodding along towards the rally, but this was not the case. I instead encountered hundreds of Volkswagens taking part in the annual ‘Run the Ring’ charity event around the M25 – although the original T1 Transporter is affectionately known as the VW Bus, so this was in a way fitting. Having cleared the long, slow convoy I made good progress to the showground and parked up around 0830hrs.
