Di Forbes, better known to some as a Director of Network Bus & Truck Parts in Leeds, reports from Skipton where the 18th Yorkshire Dales Preserved Bus Running Day was held on 13 October
What makes a successful running day…? It starts with the love of buses and the preservationists who have that shared love, who work hard to bring others together to create a variety of vehicles and destinations.
Skipton has it all. A traditional old market town nestling in the Yorkshire Dales, it already has lots of atmosphere; what is missing is a bus museum, and generally the bus running days centre around the hub, which is the town’s museum and return back to that point, but on one Sunday a year the whole of Skipton becomes the bus museum!
2024 heralded the 18th annual Skipton running day, arranged in the most part by Alex Lawson and the team that make up the Aire Valley Transport Group. Alex created the timetable, arranged the routes and rostered the owners and drivers to provide one of the best days out a family or a bus lover could ask for. Over 30 vehicles, including stars of the small screen in the form of the Leyland Lion (KW 1961) which features on TV’s ‘All Creatures Great and Small,’ and soon to be on the big screen (HLW 159) – watch out for her in a British gangster movie coming soon – gathered on the rally site, positioned on the car park at the opposite side of the town to the bus station, allowing pedestrians to view the vehicles within the safety of the marshalled car park, without those vehicles moving, because event organisers quickly grow to understand the greatest asset on a running day can soon become its greatest risk if an unaware pedestrian ambles behind a moving bus.
