A number of staff from Stagecoach in South Wales have been named as ‘heroes’ due to their outstanding efforts during the pandemic. Stagecoach staff can nominate their colleagues for going the extra mile to help other workers or customers.
The first member of staff to be named as a hero is John Carpenter, Supervisor at Brynmawr Out Station. He appealed to his colleagues to ask for donations such as toiletries, squash and other basic necessities for patients being treated for COVID-19 at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. The first batch has already been donated to the hospital. John is now working hard to collect more.
Next up is Kevin Mathias, Electrician and Health & Well-being Representative at Porth depot, who regularly shares posts on the company intranet to help staff with their mental and physical health. Kevin has raised money for local charities such as ‘The Rhondda Sea Cadets’ and ‘Ty Hafan’ and has recently wrote two poems about COVID19 to help raise the spirit of staff.
Nathan Davies, Driver and Green Road Champion at Merthyr depot has been calling isolated staff regularly to ensure they are safe and well. Nathan has been shopping for essential goods for isolated staff and started a quiz on the company intranet.
Mark Powell, Fleet Engineer for Cwmbran, Brynmawr and Megabus has been raising staff spirits during the pandemic. Mark has given up his own time to cook breakfast rolls for staff to show his appreciation for them keeping the business going during these difficult times.
Matthew Morris, Supervisor and Mark Rees, Trade Union Representative who both work at Blackwood depot, have been making regular appeals to any staff who may need help such as collecting shopping. They have continued to maintain contact and offer support to staff throughout the pandemic.
Nicholas Young, Driver at Cwmbran depot has gone out of his way to contact colleagues to keep in touch and offer support whilst they have been at home. Many colleagues have praised Nicholas for helping them through this difficult time.
Phil Walters and Steve Walters, General Service Operatives at Aberdare depot have been ensuring that all vehicles are being smart cleaned every night, including sweeping and thorough sanitising. The two brothers always work hard without complaint.
Finally, Steven Napper, Driver at Porth depot has been involved with many fundraising activities for local charities before and during the pandemic and gives up a lot of his free time to help others.
Nigel Winter, Managing Director for Stagecoach in South Wales said: “The staff at South Wales are doing a fantastic job to keep the country moving and ensuring links are available for key workers and other essential journeys. I would like to add my heartfelt thanks to the staff that have been rightly named ‘heroes’ for giving up their time to help their colleagues and the local communities. They are all a credit to Stagecoach and we will celebrate and commend them for everything that they are doing.”
