A new report from Optibus looks at the priorities, challenges and trends shaping the industry in 2025
We all know that the industry has many challenges ahead. It’s rare for a week to go by without a good news story of an operator introducing a new fleet of buses or electrifying its depot, but behind those headlines, the industry, both coach and bus, faces significant challenges. Whether it’s the 90/180 day rule affecting coach operators regularly heading deep into Europe, or roadworks on the High Street delaying the number 90 to the city hospital, there are constant issues that impact on the ability to continue delivering services.
Seeking to define these operational and strategic difficulties more clearly, Optibus recently published its 2025 ‘State of the Industry’ report, which takes its data from a survey conducted to assess key industry concerns, including driver shortages, the transition to zero-emission fleets, and the adoption of new technologies. Optibus explains that the goal of the survey was to validate assumptions, identify potential oversights, and explore how priorities differ across regions, and the ensuing report provides a snapshot of the current state of public transportation planning, highlighting the most pressing issues, emerging trends, and areas of opportunity. The analysis also offers actionable guidance for public transport operators and authorities in making informed decisions that enhance service reliability and future-readiness.
