Sunderland bus passengers have expressed their approval of gas buses in a survey, with 92% preferring them to standard vehicles.
Following the successful introduction of the fleet of gas buses, which were launched 12 months ago, Stagecoach North East surveyed members of the public who use the local bus operations.
93% of passengers who responded to the survey said that the gas bus offered a ‘smoother, more comfortable ride,’ while 94% agreed that the bus was ‘quieter, with much less engine noise.’
Customers said that other aspects played an important part in their decision to use the buses, such as improved environmental performance, with 42% stating this as a main factor and 50% saying it was a bonus when choosing a bus service.
Access to free WiFi has also well received, with 50% saying it was part of the reason for choosing a gas bus and almost 40% agreeing that it is a positive bonus when riding the bus.
Almost 40% of those surveyed said they travel more than before.
The design of the gas bus also helped to play a part, with 42% stating the new shape helped to attract their attention.
Phil Medlicott, Managing Director, Stagecoach North East said: “The gas buses represent a significant investment in sustainable services in Sunderland and demonstrate our commitment to enhancing customer service levels.
“We’re delighted that customers value the environmental benefits and appreciate the improved comfort and facilities.”
