Potential fraudulent payments have prompted Travelmaster to suspend the sale of long-term tickets using contactless aboard buses across South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire’s co-ordinated multi-operator and multi-modal ticket provider Travelmaster gave notice that from 30 July it would suspend the sale of seven day TravelMaster tickets using contactless payments, including via Apple and Google Pay, on board buses within the county. Contactless and card payments will continue to be accepted for the tickets on the Sheffield Supertram network, through the new TravelMaster app, at ticket vending machines in transport interchanges, at Payzone stores and online via the TravelMaster website, and cash will continue to be accepted on buses, but the organisation said that the change to on-bus payments was needed due to fraud concerns.

TravelMaster General Manager John Henshall said: “Whilst it is always disappointing to need to remove a convenient payment option for our customers, it is imperative that we act now to prevent serious fraud concerns from our operators. We will continue to monitor the situation and have been working on ensuring our customers continue to have alternative methods for buying and loading tickets to their smartcards, including the new TravelMaster app.”

Longer-term Travelmaster tickets, which are valid on all operators in the county, will not be available on buses with contactless payments due to fraud concerns. First’s YN58 ETY carries South Yorkshire PTE heritage livery. JONATHAN WELCH
