Jonathan Taylor reports from the launch of a new line-up of electric vehicles which takes Wrightbus into new territory
Since the July 2024 election result, there has been a rather odd talking down of our economy sitting side-by-side with the repeated government priority of producing economic growth.
At the same time, new policies and taxes have been introduced which all reduce economic growth. I am sure I am not the only one doing some head-scratching as to how this could be happening. Running a business in this environment feels a bit like being in one of those TV gameshows where contestants try to reach the goal but have to cope with obstacles thrown at them and people deliberately trying to make them fail. The best make it through, the others fall.
As I said in an editorial comment on this subject last year, those of us in business, the economic wealth creators, just have to get on with the circumstances of the day and make the most of them. How refreshing then, to be invited to Daylesford Farm, in deepest Gloucestershire, to get updates and product launch news from Jo Bamford and his group of manufacturing and service businesses which include Wrightbus. Refreshing because the enthusiasm, energy and drive coming from the senior team restored my confidence and belief in the ability of businesses in this country to innovate, compete and succeed, even in manufacturing, written off by many as near impossible given the global competitors with lower cost bases.
