Do you have a tea and biscuits appointment with the Traffic Commissioner (TC) in your diary? Well then you should have attended the C E Transport Law Conference that took place in Milton Keynes on 10 April. But don’t fret, you can read this report as CBW was kindly invited by Beverley Bell Consulting & Training to attend the exclusive event. A wide array of speakers was featured, ranging from solicitors and law enforcement professionals to Senior Traffic Commissioner Richard Turfitt, who was scheduled as the final speaker.

Dos and don’ts at PI

After delegates were welcomed with tea, coffee and caramelised biscuits, C E Transport Law Legal Director Carolyn Evans kickstarted the conference by stressing the importance of a Public Inquiry (PI) to retain one’s operator licence. “Anticipate the questions of the TC and remember to provide evidence,” she urged. “I sometimes see a reply with just one or two paragraphs, this is not enough. You need to have a very comprehensive reply, and do not assume that the TC knows about your business.” Carolyn also reminded attendees that when dealing with the loss of a Transport Manager, it is possible to apply for an extended grace period, and the new Transport Manager must be appointed before the deadline is up. She concluded her session by sharing the most common mistakes to avoid when dealing with a PI, which she said are:
