Nick Larkin reports on a high-quality restoration which fills an important gap in the story of a well-known operator of days gone by

An eagerly awaited replica of buses which were a familiar sight with legendary independent King Alfred Motor Services for two decades made its public debut at a major running day paying tribute to the operator on 6 May.

Fifteen Leyland Titan PD1s and PD2s with the manufacturer’s own bodywork were bought between 1947 and 1953 but the last was scrapped in 1971.

Now history is being recreated with an all-Leyland PD2 beautifully restored into King Alfred guise. The Titan made its debut at the Original King Alfred Running Day featuring more than 40 buses and coaches, the oldest 95 years old and and newest 22, operating routes in and around Winchester.
