Two bridges too far

Dartmeet Bridge, the point of no return on the Two Bridges to Ashburton road. ALAN PAYLING

Alan Payling offers a warning to drivers to plan their route carefully when they’re in Dartmoor National Park; the signs may not always help, using sat nav is not a great idea and problems can arise in the blink of an eye

It was a tour driver that I met in Sidmouth’s Manor Road coach park who alerted me to a problem with a couple of road signs on Dartmoor. This is perhaps not an uncommon issue but is one I have experienced with temporary signs for diversions and road closures. You know the sort of thing I mean. Those yellow signs with black lettering that sometimes have seven or eight lines of text warning you about something that is happening or is going to happen on a road or in a town you have never visited in your life. The sort of sign that you approach at 25 to 30 mph, manage to read one or even two lines then the sign is history and you’re left wondering: “What was that all about?” And you drive on, fingers crossed that whatever it was about, it’s either not about to happen, or has happened and you’ll be OK.
