Commercial vehicles have been exempted from 10-year tyre age restrictions. A circular sent to testers from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) includes a category headed: ‘Using old tyres on Historic Vehicles.’

The notification says: ‘The requirements for tyre age and tyre age markings do not apply to motor vehicles and trailers with a first use date of 40 years and over and used for non-commercial purposes.’

There has been much controversy over whether frequent tyre changes were needed for preserved vehicles travelling low mileages: many warn of the dangers of elderly tyres, especially when they are on vehicles that have been standing.
