The 1950 Dutfield-bodied 6PF, registration CCF777 was the first new vehicle bought by Alan Brewster in 1950, after taking over Goldsmiths of Sicklesmere, Suffolk, in 1949. Now Goldsmiths’ depot is being redeveloped for housing and the Vulcan has to go.

‘It will be sad to see the coach go as I’ve known it all my life,’ said Alan’s daughter, Mandy. ‘Dad kept it as it was his first new vehicle though it was withdrawn from service in the early 1960s.

Goldsmiths, which Mandy said originated in the 1920s, operated 28 vehicles in its 1960s heyday and ran everything since from local services to continental tours.

Operations were gradually reduced since the millennium and Mr Brewster died 10 years ago. It now has one bingo contract, subcontracted to another operator.

Said Mandy: “I very much hope we can find a good home for the Vulcan.”

Although a major project, the coach, which has a Perkins P6 engine, is deemed restorable.

Southport-based Vulcan built cars until its first bus appeared in 1922. Commercials were available with the company’s own engine. The firm was taken over by Tilling-Stevens in 1938 and, by then under Rootes Group control, closed in 1953.

Other vehicles stored at Sicklesmere are believed to have found new owners including two Bedford SB3s with Plaxton bodywork, 1959 example NCF111 and GJM2 dating from 1960. A further coach, 1963 AEC Reliance/Harrington 437FLY is also rehomed.

Mandy is hoping to get £15,000 for the Vulcan. She can be contacted on 07771 882165.
