Transport Museum Wythall has a number of bus-related events coming up before the end of the season, including a special day to mark 120 years of Midland Red, one of Britain’s largest bus companies at its peak, on 6 October.

Founded as the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company in 1904, the well-known bus operator began operations under the name in 1905. It ruled the roads across the Midlands for many years, and designed and built its own buses, including its legendary motorway coaches, until it was absorbed into the National Bus Company. The museum will be running many of its own Midland Red buses and says it anticipates lots of visiting ones too.

The company was renowned not just for building its own vehicles, but also for the innovation that went into its buses and coaches, including lightweight construction, disc brakes as early as the 1950s and the widely acclaimed ‘motorway express’ coaches able to run at up to 100mph on the M1 to London.
