“We are always keen to involve younger drivers and would be more than happy to offer them training on members of the heritage fleet,” said Seaford and District Motor Services Managing Director David Mulpeter. “If you are interested, come and talk to us. None of us are getting any younger and there will need to be people to drive these older buses when we’re gone!”
Getting to grips with manual, often non-synchromesh gearboxes, non-assisted steering and vacuum brakes are among the skills David is prepared to teach.
The operator is currently looking for full and part-time drivers mainly for modern members of the fleet, though there will also be the opportunity to drive heritage vehicles on wedding hire etc.
Seaford and District currently has 14 full-time drivers and 16-17 part-timers. Work includes local bus services, contracts, tours and rail replacement, using a fleet of modern coaches, double and single-deckers plus heritage vehicles.
The Eastbourne sightseeing tour began on Saturday 30 March for the summer season. A charity heritage bus running day is being planned for the August Bank Holiday.
